Currently stocked: Hatchery split into 4 sections, currently 3 sections stocked. 20 tanks in the fry unit, 4 in the Parr Unit and 4 tanks in Smolt Unit 2.
Q3 & Q4 affected by issues with external supplier for feed. This caused mortality, but not above the reporting level. External supplier investigating issue with the feed. No obvious detectable issues with the feed.
Water temperature different across the site. Hatchery 2: 4C, Hatchery 3&4: 6C Fry Unit 14C, Parr and Smolt 1 & 2: 15C, site thermometer used for biosecurity.
Fish samples for VMD, were not in withdrawal at time of sampling. Aquacen and Cress treatments used in the First feed Unit.
Current plan: 4th July starting to put out fish to FW loch sites.
Some trays in the hatchery showed a number of failed eggs (these were seen prior to picking), at the time of visit in the process of picking trays in the hatchery. The remaining tanks that were stocked on site fish appeared healthy. Manager remarked that eggs from Ireland in recent years had been of poorer quality, with increased levels of hatch fails.

Site has been having issues with ova specifically in the Q3 populations received in Nov 2021 and Dec 2022 from Aquagen. In addition, increased mortality was observed in the recent Q1 and Q4 Kindrum Hatchery ova inputs (Ireland). In the highest observed mortality events (15.92% with loss of 297980) salinity baths (2.5pp) were used to separate unviable ova from healthy population, allowing for more efficient sweep during picking.
Water input originates from River Ailort. Each unit in the facility has its own water filtration and disinfection system. The water filtration and disinfection system is composed of sand filters and an ozonation component (treats water at 950milivolts for
~1hr)., Water exchange on the whole site is very minimal and therefore is classed as a recirculation system, with the smolt unit exchanging ~2% per day. In the hatchery one full water exchange occurs per day.
Treatment records show that regular formalin and Cress administered to keep on to of any saprolegniosis observed. Buffodine is used to disinfect eggs upon arrival at the hatchery.

Site has been struggling with mild fungal issues and have been conducting weekly treatments with Pyceze and Aquacen. At the time of inspection stock were being treated.
Stock last vaccinated between 12/08/2024 to 29/08/2024
During inspection stock were observed to be shoaling and feeding well. Stock were observed to be in good condition with very few fish seen with fungus. Little number of mort's were observed (mort's where observed in mort collectors).
Due to site temperatures throughout the year being above 14 degrees a 30 fish EC sample was taken. During internal inspection of the sampled fish were observed to be in good condition. P1,P3,P4, P5, P6 sampled by . P2 sampled by

Site visited in response to two significant mortality events in wks33 (279,806) and 34 (310,008) resulting in the loss of 589,814 fish; 9.14% and 11.14% of the Q1 cohort respectively. There are currently 3 cohorts on site: Q1 smolts (which were the population affected by the mortalities), Q1 parrs and Q4 parrs (both of which have not suffered any elevated mortalities).
The Q1 smolts came on as ova from Inverpolly and were incubated for 17 weeks, which is slightly longer than the normal 15 weeks.
The site has attributed the losses to non-feeders. Fish from the Q1 smolt cohort were very thin and not taking in food )photos and videos were shared showing this). Site staff increased mortality removal from the affected tanks and mortalities have decreased this week (wk35: 4,926 (0.3%)).
Mortality for the last 4 weeks:
Q1 Smolts - Wk34: 310,008 (11.14% of that cohort), Wk33: 279,806 (9.14%), Wk32: 8,361 (0.27%), Wk31: 35,556 (1.14%)
Q1 Parr - Wk34: 1,905 (0.07% of that cohort), Wk33: 2,095 (0.07%), WK32: 3,083 (0.11%), Wk31: 8,379 (0.29%)
Q4 Parr - Wk34: 2,687 (0.1% of that cohort), WK33: 7,980 (0.3%), Wk32: 2,679 (0.1%), Wk31: 1,547 (0.05%)
The Q1 smolts are scheduled to go directly to sea sites in feb 2026. The Q4 parr were being transferred to FW site Loch Lochy on the day of inspection and there will be none of this cohort left at the hatchery at the end of next week. The next input of ova will be from Aquagen in Oct 25.
The site has completed 3 treatments of Aquacen and Cress for Saprolegnia and gut fungus over the last 9 days. The Q4 parrs were vaccinated at the beginning of August with Alphaject PD1 and Micro6 in combination with a 3rd vaccine for Pastuerella,
Moritella and Yersinia. MOWI are developing a new vaccine which they hope to trial on the Q1 parr population of fish at the hatchery in Oct this year for Rickettsia.
The fish on site appeared in good health with very few mortalities observed across the site. Moribunds in single digits were noted across the entire site but these displayed no other clinical signs of disease and so were not sampled on this occasion.
Some of the tanks were undergoing treatment with Cress and Aquacen. The fish were shoaling nicely in the tanks and no food was sitting on the bottom of the tanks as shown in videos that were taken during the mortality events. [Original PDF]
